Review – ColourPop Sailor Moon – Pretty Guardian Eye Shadow

by Mia Violet | Mar 13, 2020 | Makeup, Review

The Sailor Moon collection from Colour Pop sold out in, what? About an hour for the entire thing? Although I didn’t get everything I wanted (I’m not bitter, honest), I was lucky enough to grab a couple of items, including the Queen of the collection: The Pretty...

This isn’t a trans focused account anymore, but This isn’t a trans focused account anymore, but today the UK government finally responded to calls to reform the Gender Recognition Act (GRA). As this obviously affects me greatly I wanted to give a quick summary of it all.⁣
⁣
(Original photo by @rega_photography)⁣
⁣
⁣
🌈 What is the GRA?⁣
⁣
The GRA became law in 2005, finally allowing trans people to change their legal gender in the UK, via a certificate.⁣
⁣
However the application process for a Gender Recognition Certificate is costly and convoluted. It involves submitting medical documents, and ends with a panel deciding somebody’s gender based on a folder of “evidence”.⁣
⁣
In 2016 the government began to discuss updating the GRA to modernise trans rights in the UK. Many delays and a public consultation followed.⁣
⁣
⁣
🌈 What trans people (and allies) wanted:⁣
⁣
- A process to self-identify your own legal gender⁣
⁣
- Non-binary recognition⁣
⁣
- Acknowledgement of the need to overhaul trans healthcare⁣
⁣
- Protections for trans youth⁣
⁣
⁣
🌈 The government response:⁣
⁣
- A removal of the application fee for a Gender Recognition Certificate, but no change to the process⁣
⁣
- Confirmation of 3 new gender clinics (which already exist)⁣
⁣
- No changes to the rules for single sex spaces (removal remains case by case)⁣
⁣
⁣
🌈 Why this response isn’t good enough:⁣
⁣
- The response panders to both trans people and transphobes at once, via problematic language⁣
⁣
- Essentially, after years of campaigning and a public consultation that showed the majority of the public are in favour of self ID, nothing is changing⁣
⁣
- Trans youth, and all non-binary people, have been ignored again⁣
⁣
⁣
🌈 What now?⁣
⁣
We should continue to:⁣
⁣
Share trans voices.⁣
Donate directly to trans people.⁣
Pressure your MP to improve trans rights and recognise non-binary people.⁣
Promote self-ID as the fair alternative.⁣
(Privately and directly) call out transphobia.⁣
Make your workplace trans-friendly.⁣
Support the autonomy of trans children.⁣

I know what you’re thinking. You’re looking at I know what you’re thinking. You’re looking at this picture of me and one thought jumped right to mind:⁣
⁣
‘Wow, Mia! What product did you use as a contour kit? As it looks like you’re using something new for sculpting and I’m quite quite curious what it is.’⁣
⁣
Glad you asked!⁣
⁣
So Jecca Blac gifted me their Sculpt & Soften palette (with no strings attached). I gave it a go and combined it with the Beauty Bay x Nikkie Tutorials eye palette, and some fake freckles from Barry M, and evidently I felt pretty good about myself 👀⁣
⁣
If you’re interested in checking Sculpt & Soften out, or any other Jecca Blac products (for what it’s worth they’re the most trans inclusive brand I’ve found) I’ve got an affiliate link that will let them know I sent you, and give me a little commission.⁣
⁣
It’s entirely your choice if you want to use it or not! Comment or DM me if you want it 💜⁣
⁣
~~⁣
⁣
Are you bored of the ‘Mia lays under a ring light’ selfies yet?⁣
⁣
I promise I’ll start to vary it up again! ⁣
⁣
Taking photos like this, where I can lay back and take my time to try and feel pretty and at peace, has been an enormous help for my mental health.⁣
⁣
The last few months have been rough. I’m still trying to get my head around the fact that I have ADHD, never mind get used to the meds.⁣
⁣
Makeup and selfies are my self-care time. They’re a moment to find a quiet and fun moment for myself, despite all the stress around me. To reflect, play, and heal, before getting back out there into the world.⁣

TW: Discussion of suicidal thoughts.⁣ ⁣ We ne TW: Discussion of suicidal thoughts.⁣
⁣
We need to normalise saying ‘I am feeling suicidal’. ⁣
⁣
If it remains taboo then people who struggle with intrusive thoughts and suicidal ideation will feel they can’t talk about it. ⁣
⁣
People like me.⁣
⁣
Hi, yeah. I struggle with suicidal thoughts sometimes.⁣
⁣
I feel like there’s an idea that they descend quickly and come with a sense of certainty. They can. But they don’t always.⁣
⁣
When I struggle with suicidal thoughts they begin gradually. A bad day begins where I might feel “off”. I’ll still do my makeup and take some selfies, but my eyes will look vacant and distant. Slowly it turns into a worse day. I find myself with a calm sense of defeat and hopelessness.⁣
⁣
Eventually a thought will hit me:⁣
⁣
‘It would be better if I died.’⁣
⁣
I hear it in my own voice, but a logical and loving part of me always puts her hand up and reminds me that ‘Yeah, that’s not a normal thought, babe.’⁣
⁣
And that’s when I stop what I’m doing and move into full on mental health management.⁣
⁣
I tell a friend. I cancel my obligations. I order some food. And then I start journaling, and explain to myself that these thoughts are back and I need to ride them out.⁣
⁣
~~⁣
⁣
I am a person who struggles with recurring self-destructive thoughts.⁣
⁣
That’s not a reflection on me or my life.⁣
⁣
It’s just a fact of my mental health.⁣
⁣
It doesn’t have to cause alarm, distrust, or fear. I want it to be accepted as something I occasionally deal with, like my ADHD or my gender dysphoria.⁣
⁣
Because if we can make it more acceptable to voice these feelings, we make it safer for vulnerable people to reach out.⁣
⁣
💜⁣

Is it too sappy and weird for me to say the new @N Is it too sappy and weird for me to say the new @Nikkietutorials and @beautybaycom makeup palette feels special to me? Because it does. Let me explain:⁣
⁣
As a trans woman who went through a bumpy time to get here, makeup has been a lot of things over the years. Secret hobby. Relationship destroyer. Shield. Coping mechanism. Fuel for a compulsive shopping habit…⁣
⁣
But now it’s everything! It’s my favourite form of creative expression which lets me express my personality, my queerness, and my femininity.⁣
⁣
I’ve come a very long way from being a closeted trans teenager longing to wear makeup. ⁣
⁣
Back then I was so afraid of anyone knowing I was trans, I couldn’t fathom ever being who I am now.⁣
⁣
So using a palette designed by my favourite makeup YouTuber (who is also a fellow trans woman)? And feeling completely happy sharing this photo of me?⁣
⁣
Yeah. It feels pretty awesome.⁣
⁣
~~⁣
⁣
As a final comment I just want to shoutout to my queer followers who feel they’ve still got a lot way to go to find their happiness.⁣
⁣
I’ve gotten some messages lately based on my recent content saying I feel very “far away” from them.⁣
⁣
Friends, I know it’s intimidating, I know sometimes being open and blissfully you feels like a million miles away, but you’ve already made more progress than you think.⁣
⁣
I promise it’s going to happen soon, and it’s going to be so, so, worth it.⁣
⁣
The whole community have been where you are, we all started somewhere. We’re all rooting for you, and we’ve got your back.⁣
